Let’s start at the beginning. What is hydraulics?
Hydraulics: The Invisible Force Behind Modern Technology
Whether you realize it or not, hydraulics play a huge role in our daily lives and in industry. From giant excavators to precision instruments in the medical world, many machines and processes simply wouldn’t function without them.
At NAP Engineering BV we are the specialists in the field of hydraulics. But what exactly is hydraulics? And how does it contribute to the industry? On this page we explain it in detail!
What is Hydraulics?
Hydraulics is a technology that uses fluids under pressure to to transmit power, generate motion and drive machinesThis is done via a closed or open system of pipes, cylinders, pumps and valves.
The basic principles of hydraulics are based on Pascal's law, which states that pressure exerted on a fluid in a closed system is evenly distributedThis means that with a small amount of force on a small surface area, a much larger force can be created on another point.
In other words: small movement → big power!
Where is Hydraulics used?
Hydraulic systems are all around us! Here are some examples of where you will find hydraulics:
🔹 Construction and Infrastructure – Excavators, cranes, forklifts and bulldozers all operate on hydraulic systems.
🔹 Agricultural machinery – Tractors and harvesters use hydraulics to perform heavy tasks efficiently.
🔹 Industry and Production – From presses to conveyor belts, hydraulics are essential in production processes.
🔹 Aerospace – Aircraft flaps and landing gear operate using hydraulic pressure systems.
🔹 Shipping and Offshore – In the maritime sector, hydraulic systems are used for anchors, bow thrusters and loading cranes.
How does a hydraulic system work?
A hydraulic system consists of several components that work together to create movement and force. These are the main components:
🔹 Hydraulic Pump – Moves the oil.
🔹 Hydraulic Cylinder – Converts pressure into linear motion, for example in a forklift or excavator.
🔹 Hydraulic Motor – Converts hydraulic energy into rotational motion.
🔹 Hydraulic Valves – Regulate the flow direction and pressure of the fluid.
🔹 Hydraulic Hoses and Pipes – Transport the hydraulic fluid within the system.
🔹 Hydraulic Oil – The 'fuel' of the system, which provides lubrication and pressure build-up.
The interplay of these components makes it possible to generate enormous forces with a relatively small input!

Why Hydraulics has the Future
Hydraulics are not only powerful and efficient, they are also becoming smarter and more sustainable. Modern hydraulic systems use:
🔹 Energy-efficient pumps – For example the CytroBox / Cytropac Reduced energy consumption and lower operating costs.
🔹 Smart sensors – Better insight into performance and maintenance needs.
🔹 Sustainable hydraulic oils – Environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional oil.
🔹 Electric and hybrid drives – Combination of hydraulic and electrical systems for optimum performance.
The industry does not stand still, and NAP Engineering BV we are always ahead of the game!
